Criteria for Supply Chain Strategies
Keeping the already mentioned considerations in mind, companies have developed four different criteria for supply chain strategies:
lean continuous replenishment,
agile quick response,
lean planning and execution, and
lean-agile postponement.
Lean Continuous Replenishment
The Lean continuous replenishment approach is relevant in situations where replenishment lead times are brief and demand is predictable. Good communication with suppliers helps companies to replenish their stock quickly.
By allowing suppliers to have a clear view of their supply chains, companies can create more certainty over their processes. Taking a Lean approach to supply chains helps eliminate unwanted supplies.
Say, for example, that a restaurant receives regular deliveries from its food supplier. Because there's a regular demand for the product, the food supplier can ensure that the restaurant always receives exactly the right levels of supplies when it needs them.
Agile Quick Response
The agile, quick response approach is used in a situation when inventory should be replenished quickly and demand is unpredictable.
In this situation, the supply chain must be able to keep up with the unpredictable demands of customers. The company has to ensure that it can respond quickly and efficiently to impending deadlines.
Say that a clothing company wants to sell T-shirts for the upcoming summer and fall fashion lines. It has to create and deliver these new products in a short amount of time. Because the demand is unpredictable, the company delays production in order to put together the base of the product before it's sent off for final production.
Lean Planning and Execution
The Lean planning and execution approach is used when there's predictable demand and replenishment lead times are long.
Companies must plan their strategies ahead of time in order to meet demand in a timely fashion. (...)
